Role Summary

The Manager Workers Compensation is responsible for mitigating Alaska Airlines’ exposure to workers risk by formulating, developing, and leading workers compensation claims and litigation related activities, as well as driving down the total cost of risk managing workers compensation insurance and financing activities.  As a people leader, the Manager, Workers Compensation is responsible for developing and executing the strategy and priorities for the team by leading the investigative and negotiation approaches and identifying key internal stakeholders and appropriate vendor partners to mitigate the financial risk of workers compensation claims to the organization.   

Key Duties

  • Establish strategic goals and direction for Company-wide workers compensation claims management and mitigation with a multi-year horizon, focused on resolution innovation and cross-divisional progressive improvement. 
  • Directs a program to ensure the proper and efficient handling of workers compensation claims, gathering data on claims for both record keeping and loss forecasting purposes, and estimating the financial value of claims. 
  • Assess direct team and contractor team developmental needs while identifying training solutions to develop claims professionals that are fact finders, risk- focused, willing to seek solutions and unwavering in matters of compliance and safety. 
  • Lead highly complex workers compensation insurance and risk management activities for Alaska Air Group and its subsidiaries. 
  • Ensure all claims are investigated, managed and resolved with Company fiduciary interests at the forefront. 
  • Guide teams across the organization in assisting in the resolution of claims and guides the direction for improvement and learning lessons from individual claims. 
  • Lead multiple streams of vendor teams and attorney partners in the Company’s insurance claim resolution process. 
  • Manage Company and outside counsel response to insured litigation.   
  • Develop and provide worker’s compensation related insurance renewal presentations to prospective insurers during yearly policy renewals. 
  • Collaborate with vendors and Company actuaries to accurately forecast annual worker’s compensation budgets. 
  • Partner with Company accounting teams to manage monthly workers compensation and insurance reconciliations. 
  • Lead quarterly state workers compensation reporting processes and ensure Company compliance with reporting regulations. 
  • Ensure vendors payments throughout the workers compensation program are audited and paid timely. 
  • Develop and manage front line relationships and strategy to inform business partners of workers compensation claim support and proper claim protocols.  
  • Special attention is paid to emerging risks and trends with an expectation to educate stakeholders on appropriate responses.  In addition to an internal team, this position sources and leads multiple vendor partners throughout the entire Alaska Airlines footprint. 
  • Contribute to the development and management of processes and procedures to ensure accurate insurance policy and claim records are kept pursuant to company objectives and requirements. 
  • Promote a high-performance culture by cultivating and motivating direct/indirect reports through coaching, mentoring and by providing regular and meaningful feedback. 
     
     

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required 

  • 5 years of experience in workers compensation or risk management with strong working knowledge of insurance underwriting, claims adjusting and reserving complex claims. 
  • 2 years of leadership experience. 
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). 
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Minimum age of 18. 
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.  

Preferred  

  • Performance management and process improvement experience. 
  • Risk Management certification. 
  • Juris Doctor or paralegal certification. 
  • A Master’s degree.  
  • Proven ability to quickly understand complex processes, effectively scope assessments, and lead high energy, success-oriented teams. 
  • Ability to provide claims and insurance policy consultation, within area of responsibility. 
  • Understanding of insurance principles, insurance renewal processes, and claims reserving processes. 
  • Proven track record of prioritizing and executing multiple deliverables and demands. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build influence across multiple departments around company strategies. 
  • Proficient presentation skills, including verbal and written communication. 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Excels at change management and challenging the status quo.

Salary Range

$120,400 - $180,600 / year

Salary Details

Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Hawaiian/Horizon employees. Alaska/Hawaiian/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

 

Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
